Weekend Getaway: New York Edition

For many tourist and thrill-seekers, few things sound better than a weekend getaway in New York City. The Big Apple and the city that never sleeps are just two nicknames for this amazing city that is bustling with energy, innovation and creativity. There's something for everyone and regardless of when you visit NYC during the year, you're bound to create unforgettable memories.

One weekend may not be enough to see all the fabulous places, but the following suggestion can at least help you create your three-day itinerary packed with excitement.

Where to stay

Whether you’re arriving from a short flight or getting off a bus from Montreal to New York, you should settle in your hotel room quickly and hit the city as soon as possible. There are many great places where you can book your stay, but if you want to spend your two nights in a legendary and classy place that won’t empty your wallet, head over to the Lexington located just five blocks from the Grand Central Terminal. This is the place that once welcomed stars like Marilyn Monroe and with its chic design, art collections and live jazz on Fridays, it’ll make you feel glamorous as well during your short stay.

The first night in the city

Start your NYC adventure with Times Square, the place where the New Year’s Ball drops, the Naked Cowboy sings and huge billboards and flashing lights mesmerize everyone who comes. Next, there’s Broadway and the amazing shows in over 41 different theatres that are guaranteed to blow your mind with famous musicals and plays. Local restaurants with celebrity chefs will feed both your body and soul after your exciting first night out so you can head back to your hotel feeling content.

Saturday in NYC

Saturday gives you plenty of time to see the city so start your day early with New York’s most famous buildings, the Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State. Both of them will give you a spectacular view of the NYC skyline from their observatory decks. One of the things you’ll see clearly is Central Park so that could be your next stop.

This gorgeous, historic park gives you loads of things to do and see, from the Central Park Zoo, the Belvedere Castle, Bethesda Terrace to Strawberry Fields, or you can just spend your time relaxing from the city noise and enjoying in a concert.

Maybe a visit to a library doesn’t sound that exciting, but the New York Public Library is an impressive building with a stunning interior design that some couples even pick for their wedding ceremony and surely won’t leave you feeling indifferent. Another popular tourist attraction just two blocks away is the Grand Central Terminal and it’s so much more than just a train station. It’s a marvellous place where you can spend hours soaking in the elegant beauty of the marble Grand Staircase, the Whispering Gallery, the Grand Central Market and the majestic celestial mural on the ceiling.

It's an absolute must you take some time to visit at least one of the prominent museums the city is proud of – the Met, MoMA, the Guggenheim, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Moving Image.

Safety in New York

New York City is one of the safest big cities in the world and the crime rate is pretty low. You should avoid risky behaviors such as walking through Central Park during nighttime or choosing a vacant car when riding a subway. If you decide to join the NYC traffic as a driver, make sure to evaluate your car's safety features first. If you get involved in a traffic collision, remember that there are some really professional lawyers that can help you. If such an incident occurs during your subway ride, you should find lawyer for train accident in NYC. New York City is all about safety, but you should always know who to reach out to in case of any incident.
If you're a foreigner visiting the USA for the first time, you might be surprised by the percentage of firearm use for protection. The National Rifle Association-Institute of Legislative Action says it is pretty hard to get a gun permit in NYC compared to other places in the USA.  Even though, people in New York don't carry firearms as much as they could, you shouldn't be surprised by the fact that Americans keep guns and rifle ammunition in their homes.

The last day

Your weekend can't be over without seeing Lady Liberty, one of America's greatest icons. Take a ferry from Battery Park to get to Liberty Island and if you're up for it, climb the 393 stairs to the top of her crown!

Upon your return, head uptown through Battery Park to the famous Wall Street where you can see the Federal Hall and snap a picture of the iconic Charging Bull sculpture. Also, stop at the historic Trinity Church that was once the tallest building in the city.

Probably the most meaningful and moving experience you’ll have is the visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum that commemorates the lost lives in the attacks of September 11, 2001. It features the largest man-made waterfall in North America and two reflecting pools in the places of the old Twin Towers.

Lower Manhattan also gives you the opportunity to visit Little Italy, Chinatown and the Brooklyn Bridge. And if there’s enough time left, you can explore other neighbourhoods such as Greenwich Village, Soho and East Village and make sure you take a stroll along the High Line.

All the things you've seen will create lasting memories and the things you missed out on can be included in your next visit to the city that never sleeps!
