Just because money’s tight or you’re putting a lot away in savings doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun. There’s plenty of options to get you off the couch and out into the sunshine this weekend, and they won’t cost you a cent. Here’s 10 ideas to get you started.
Visit the spectacular new WA Museum Boola Bardip
It might be hard to believe given its awe-inspiring size, but the recently redeveloped WA Museum Boola Bardip won’t cost you a cent to enter. And it is a truly stunning experience, taking place over multiple floors with some incredible exhibitions tracking WA’s history over thousands of years. Up until January 31 you need to book ahead, but if you do find it’s too busy why not visit the nearby – and equally impressive – Art Gallery Of WA and/or PICA Gallery.
Park up at South Beach for the day
Much more than just a beach, South Beach is pride of the beach-going Freo massive. The beach itself is a little more sheltered than beaches further north, making for more peaceful – and child safe – swimming. Outside of that the rolling, pine-covered green lawns are a great place to hang out for the day. There’s also a full-size public basketball court and kids playground to keep everyone very busy.
Explore the antique shops of Guildford
So it’s obviously not free to purchase antique goods, but boy it can be a lot of fun to peruse the various antique shops around Guildford and check out all the weird and wonderful goods on offer. From Dr Russell’s to Curio Warehouse to Jones Of Guildford and Stories On The Wall, it makes for a fun and interesting afternoon. Down the road the Museum Of Natural History is also fascinating, and entry is pretty close to free. Get our full lowdown on Guildford here.
