Toluene diisocyanate or TDI is an organic compound, which is manufactured on a large scale. It is generally obtained through the nitration of toluene. 2,4-TDI is produced in 3 steps from toluene via dinitrotoluene and 2,4-diaminotoluene or TDA. In appearance, all the isomers of TDI are colourless, although some commercial samples may appear yellow.
The isocyanate functional groups in TDI often react along with the hydroxyl groups in order to create carbamate and urethane links. It is used in the manufacturing of flexible polyurethane foams. The flexible polyurethane foams produced by toluene diisocyanate also finds extensive application in the production of bedding, furniture, carpet underlay, and packaging.
TDI finds extensive application in the production of coatings, adhesives, elastomers, and sealants as well.
