A couple of days ago I was flying into Athens, with a bag full of dresses and headbands, and a yellow jacket. A smile on my face because I had never been to Greece, so it’s a new country for me. No expectations, though my friends told me just three things about Athens: bearded guys, good food, great views.
We had a couple of days in the city to explore and I want to share with you the top 3 best places in Athens that will amaze you and will show you some
<3 on Instagram.
1. The temple of Zeus
We had a Showaround tour with a local taking us through the most important sights of Athens, such as the Acropolis, the temple of Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch and others. If you want to get good shots for your Instagram profile, this is the place. I recommend you go earlier, to get good light and avoid crowds of tourists. We got there and it was a national festival so the entrance to all museums and sights was free.
The temple is now in ruins, and just some remainings of it are there to remind us of Hera, of love, of symbols and of the ancient beliefs. It housed the renowned statue of Zeus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is one of the must sees of Athens, and it’s easy to get to, as it’s in the center. We took some stunning shots, and I am happy to show you some:)
2. Lycabettus Hill
I had previously read about romantic things to do in Athens and I thought I’d take my partner to a hike to Lycabettus Hill. It was about to start raining so we decided to take the funicular up. It only goes up and down about each 30 minutes. It’s 5 euro for one way ticket and 7.50 euros for a roundtrip.
Once we got at the top of the hill, we had to wait in line to get photos, it was pretty full. The view over Athens is stunning, though. What I recommend is going down by foot and having a stop for a quiet moment with your loved one on a bench, and watch the sun go down on the Acropolis, and the city light up. This would make for a great time lapse and a romantic caption !
3. The Acropolis
Of course, who would go to Athens without going up the Acropolis? It’s a must see! While going up, there are so many photo ops, with amazing scenery. Be early though, we had to always stand in a line to go up the stairs, get down, get photos, etc. You know the drill:) The light up there is amazing, and though we couldn’t see all the 21 remaining archaeological remains because of some renovations, we did get to see the most important ones: the Parthenon, the old temple of Athena, and the Theater of Dionysus.
