Raksha Bandhan History

The history of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to Indian mythology. During Mahabharat time the story of Raksha Bandhan is related with the event when Lord Krishna got a wound on his finger and blood was oozing. Looking at the blood Draupadi tore a piece of her saree and covered the wound. The piece of Saree since then becomes a sacred thread. Lord Krishna swore to protect her from all hardships. While the untoward occurrence happened and Draupadi was dragged to the court and Dussasan tried to strip off her saree, Lord Krishna as a Saviour appeared and provided immeasurable reams of Saree to keep her covered. Thus he saved her dignity by this divine power. Thus Draupadi putting a piece of cloth become symbolic of Raksha Bandhan Ceremony.

Indian history is replete with the instances of celebration of Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan. Another mythology of Raksha Bandhan is associated with Raja Bali and Goddess Lakshmi. As king Bali was so devoted to Lord Vishnu that Lord decided to leave his realm of Vaikunth and came to Bali to reside with him, Goddess Lakshmi became much perplexed on account of bereavement from lord. She come in the guise of a Brahmin girl and put Rakhi on Bali king’s wrist and made him her brother. Bali fulfilled the sister’s urge and prayed to Lord to return to Vaikunth Dham.

The recent evidence of Rakhi is present in the medieval Indian history. Rani Karmawati was a widow queen of chittor. She was scared of the invasion by the Muslim sultan of Gujrat Bahadur Shah. She sent an emblem protection (Rakhi) to Mughal emperor Humayun for her kingdom’s safety. The emperor was overpowered by this gesture and moved to Chittor with his army. Thus he saved the queen and her empire from the danger.

This festival of Rakhi is so important that Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagor started a mass Raksha Bandhan festival during the British regime in 1905 during the partition of Bengal done by Lord Kurzan.
