Best Places to Visit by Car and Things to Do in Iceland:

Visit Reykjavik. This is the capital of the country and one of the most breathtaking cities in Iceland. It is the place were most of the trips get started because here is the biggest airport of Iceland. You can get your car rental here, explore the city, and then start your road trip around the island.

Go whale watching. There are a lot of whale watching tour operators that organize tours of 2-3 hours to see these gentle giants. They can be seen in many different locations in the capital area Reykjavik, or in the north, in Husavik.

Watch geyser eruption. Due to the intensive volcanic activity in the island, many geysers, pools and underground springs are dispersed all over the country. It's exciting to see a hot powerful stream shoot from under the ground. It is an unforgettable scenery.

Drive to Landmannalaugar. These different colored rhyolite mountains, fields of lava and the Hekla volcano make this place a trendy tourist spot. The distinct colors make it seem like an unusual planet and the most common activities done here are horseback riding and hiking.

Visit Maelifell & Myrdalsjökull. Maelifell is a volcano, which is surrounded by black soil and surreal scenery, in Myrdalsjökull Glacier Park. Although it looks as a classic cone shape volcano, when the snow melts off, a beautiful green surface covered with moss reveals. You can also find many other beautiful volcanoes and hot springs in the park.

See Kirkjufell Mountain. It is located near a small Grundarfjörður town on the north coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula in the western part of Iceland. This beautiful mountain sticks out of a simple landscape and is surrounded by beautiful waterfalls and lovely walking trail. One can even see the Northern Lights from here.

Visit Skaftafell Ice Cave. This natural ice cave is located in the Vatnajokull National Park in South Iceland. Beautiful caves of this park and a short glacier hire should be on anyone's to-do list. Marvelous ice formations can be found in different colors here.

Relax in the Blue Lagoon. This is a geothermal spa in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwestern part of Iceland. It is said to offer one of the most relaxing bathing experiences because of the water from the underground hot springs that is beneficial for the skin.

Watch the Aurora Borealis. These Northern Lights are why people come from all over the world for. Although there is no guarantee to see them, if one gets lucky, he will have the most unforgettable memories and beautiful pictures to take back home.

Enjoy the beauty of the Gullfoss Waterfall. This waterfall is one of the most visited sights of Iceland. Its natural three-step terrace creates a mighty stream.
