September 02, 2017, the very date it all started. I was bored scrolling and liking pictures on my Instagram account when suddenly I stumbled upon a photo which advertised the website FilipinoCupid.com. Because I was curious and had nothing to do at that time, I signed up. I made an account and familiarized the basics of the site. After embellishing my profile with facts about me, random male online users close to my age started appearing on my home page. I clicked this guy from UK and greeted him, but I got an auto reply saying, ‘You have to upgrade your account to Pro to read messages’. I was like ‘What the hell?’ I checked and discovered that you need to pay $6 a month to upgrade your account to ‘Pro’. The hell I would waste money on this money-grubbing site. As I was about to close it, this one particular guy with a Red Horse bottle on his primary picture caught my attention. I checked his profile and read his bio. He seemed interesting. So I hit ‘Hey’. But this time I did not get an auto reply, and instead I received his ‘Hello!’ I was like: Finally! Someone I can talk to! We conversed about things under the sun, about ourselves, etc. It was a genuine exchange, we were indeed curious towards each other!
Seconds, minutes, or maybe hours had passed. He was fun to talk to but I didn’t like interface of the website so I asked him if we could continue talking to WhatsApp or Viber. But unfortunately he had none of those apps. Because I was so genuinely interested to him, I convinced him to download WhatsApp. And glad I was when he did. At first he was hesitant to give his number when I first asked it from him, but since he didn’t know how to use the app, he eventually gave his number and I added him. Finally, I could get rid of that site!
Our conversation on WhatsApp was colorful, suffice to say. We exchanged pictures to prove we’re not faking it and we’re legit. He asked about my profession. I then sent him two photos of me: (1) wearing my nurse uniform, and (2) in bikini. He responded with two photos of him too: (1) him catching a big fish, and (2) him with a football player who seemed much taller than him. I got curious and asked about his height. He said he’s 165 cm and I smiled thinking we’re just of the same height. We video-chatted and I was surprised when he began to talk. He’s too slang! Too slang, he couldn’t even pronounce my name right! And that’s it! Hello Grubby on the screen! We’re friends! (By the way, he’s a fitter machinist.)
Days passed and we never ceased reaching to each other. Chatting and calling became a routine. The highlight in September was the day he bought a new boat for fishing. I named his boat ‘Bae’ because I saw how happy he was when it arrived to his life. Soon, September has ended.
October was a slightly dramatic month. It’s my birth month and I was excited with my Palawan vacation, thinking I would have a lot of time communicating with him. But he had to go on camping with his mates, to a place where there’s no signal. I was sad. He’s already part of my daily life. So that day arrived, I said goodbye to him with a heavy heart and he sent me a last photo before he went totally out of service with a message “So you’ll always remember me smiling.” (So sweet!)
The lonely nights started and I had no choice but to force myself to enjoy my birthday trip without his greetings for me on my birthday. We had no communication for two weeks.
After nights of just talking to the moon, he finally messaged “Hey I’m back” and it’s not even on the fourteenth day because he said they had to leave early because there’s a storm. I was ecstatic because he’s back, finally!
Then I had to say goodbye to my iPhone 7plus and my new iPhone was still in California so I didn’t have a phone for like 20 days. Another depressing moment for the both of us. Good thing, I borrowed a Nokia phone from my mum and installed WhatsApp. We’re back to chatting but no pictures from me. I could only see his photos but couldn’t send any of mine because the phone has no camera. But at least we we’re able to talk and update each other, and I was truly grateful for that. Thanks mum! … He said he missed me and I felt the same. Anyway, Happy Halloween and October has ended.
November was saying hello to my new baby iPhone 8plus. Finally as promised 100 selfies and 20 44s! LOL! Only the two of us could understand. We we’re back to our normal conversations with emoji stories to ‘spice up’ the chat. Emoji stories like these– (👨🏼💻📩🤳🏽💬⏳🗓⌛️🇦🇺🛫🛬🇵🇭🙋🏼♂️🙋🏽♀️💑💏🚕🏨🍴🍱🍍🍾🥂🧖🏼♂️🧖🏽♀️✊🏽👅😮👈🏼🤤🤮✊🏽👈🏼💦🙇🏽♀️🙇🏼♂️😴🌤🍵☕️🍞🍳👣🚤🏝👙💁🏼♂️📸💁🏽♀️🤳🏽🤳🏽🤳🏽🤳🏽🤦🏼♂️🤷🏽♀️🍸🍦🏊🏽♀️🏊🏻♂️🏖🌅👣🏨🛀🏽🛁💆🏽♀️💆🏼♂️👐🏼🤲🏼✊🏽👈🏼💦😴🌄🏃🏽♀️🏃🏼♂️🏋🏼♂️🏋🏽♀️🍿🎞🙀😻2️⃣5️⃣🎂🎉🎁👫😭✈️🇦🇺👷🏻♂️👩🏽⚕️💰💰💵🙋🏽♀️🛫🇦🇺🙋🏼♂️🏡🚙🚗🚤🎣🤵🏼👰🏽💐💍💏✊🏽👈🏼💦🤰🏽🤱🏽👪✊🏽👈🏼💦🤰🏽🤱🏽👨👩👧👦 ) –Mr. and Mrs. Grubb! Hahaha!
December strutted in. And so this was it! We we’re both tired of our virtual friendship and so he promised to come to the Philippines to finally see me. He booked his flights and I booked mine too. Christmas and the New Year were so-so celebrations for us because the real countdown would begin for January 31st!
January came. And it started to get cold. I didn’t know if it was the winter winds from the Americans traveling here in the Pacific or maybe it was just ‘us’. It was maybe me or him or our chat… that turned boring, like the feelings were not the same anymore. The excitement of waking up early to greet each other ‘good morning’ was totally gone. I was busy with my work and he was as well. We lost count of the days until it was like 15 days to go. But gladly, as ‘The Day’ was fast approaching, cold melted and the fire of excitement ignited again! It was back on the track! We needed to get ready! 10 days to go and I was having mixed emotions. He asked my younger sister to come with me so it was a relief having someone at your back (in case I would faint haha!) It’s my first time to meet a cherished friend! 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Finally, Mr. Grubb will see me now!
Travels are more meaningful with you! 👫
Happy 25th Birthday Babe 🎂🎉
